Read More (About JCB)JCB is a family-owned manufacturer based in Staffordshire, England, that produces construction and agriculture equipment used around the world. As of 2023, the company was headed up by Chairman Lord Anthony Bamford, son of Joseph Cyril Bamford, who founded JCB in 1945 in a garage in the U.K. to make tipping trailers for farmers.
At this writing, JCB claims to be the world’s third-largest construction equipment manufacturer by volume, with manufacturing plants in more than 20 countries, products sold in 150-plus countries across six continents, and a product range numbering more than 300 machines. The company’s North American headquarters are in Savannah, Georgia, where JCB also manufactures multiple models of side-door-entry wheel and track skid steers.
JCB builds construction equipment across 17 categories, including backhoe loaders, excavators, telehandlers, wheel loaders, and other machines, as well as Dieselmax and Ecomax engines and a range of attachments. JCB says it pioneered the telehandler concept in 1977 and leads the world in telehandler production. Its vast lineup includes the Rotating Telehandler, a model with a maximum lift capacity of 12,125 pounds (5,500 kilograms), a maximum lift height of 83 feet (25.5 meters), and a maximum reach of 70.2 ft (21.4 m).
JCB also says it pioneered the backhoe loader in 1953 and sells as many backhoes worldwide as all other manufacturers combined. The company is also known for the Teletruk, a forklift truck with a telescopic boom developed in 1997. JCB says the machine offers the combined functionalities of a masted forklift, skid-steer loader, compact telescopic handler, rough-terrain forklift, and compact wheel loader. The company also claims its Teleskid wheel and track skid steers represent the world’s first and only line of skid-steer loaders with a telescoping boom.
In recent years, JCB has focused increasingly on building more eco-friendly machines, and claims to be the first equipment maker to have developed a 22-ton (20-metric-ton) tracked excavator powered by a hydrogen fuel cell and the first to enter an electric mini excavator, the 19C-1E, into production. The company’s compact equipment lineup features seven electric models, including a Loadall telehandler, Teletruk forklift truck, and mini dumper. As of this writing, JCB is also working on a new super-efficient, zero-carbon emissions hydrogen combustion engine for construction machines.
